12. What is Outcome-Focused Coaching?

Outstanding managers and colleagues have always coached the people around them. In organisations today, it's more common to find managers having to manage upwards and having little time to support the people in their teams. A professional coach can therefore play a key role in the development of that team, bridging the gap between expectation and performance in the same way that the coach of a sports team does.

To develop successful coaches, you cannot train them in a vacuum without the people they will actually be coaching. To cultivate high-quality coaches, The Emerging Mind includes managers in the same training sessions as their team members.

While all are being taught the new skills, the managers can help each of their team members during the training session. This fosters a natural coaching environment because the managers and team members learn together – each in their respective roles. So when faced with a challenge on the job, team members are not stuck, trying to remember what the trainer taught them. Instead, they are comfortable turning to their manager, who in turn is ready to guide them.
